The Great Commission – Matthew 28:16-20

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshipped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Icebreaker: Do you remember your first experience of being given authority or responsibility as a young person?  How did you feel?

1. Great Transformation!

1.1 He teaches obedience

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.

Question 1: It seems Jesus wanted the disciples to go to Galilee to teach them obedience.  Could there be other reasons?

1.2 He teaches faith!

17 And when they saw him they worshipped him, but some doubted.

Question 2: Why are we a mixture of worship and doubt as individuals?

Question 3: Is there anything which we can do about it?

Question 4: How should churches look after a variety of people at different stages in their faith journey?

2. Great Adventure

2.1 All authority

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore…”

Question 5: What does it mean in practical terms for Jesus to have all authority?

2.2 All people

19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…”

Question 6: How do we go about reaching all nations?

2.3 All truth

20 “…teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

Question 7: Which of the Ten Commandments do we find most difficult?

2.4 Always

20 “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Question 8: How can this promise be fulfilled in the life of someone martyred for their faith?

3. A Prayer (The Lord’s prayer written by children)

Our Father in heaven,
You are awesome!
Show us who you are and how you want us to be,
Make earth more like heaven,
Please give us what we need to keep going each day,
Help us to know when we are wrong,
And clean us up on the inside,
Help us to let other people off and move on,
Keep us safe from the bad stuff,
You’re in charge!
You’re strong and powerful and always there,
Forever, Amazing!
Amen.
