There are over 4 million Christian in Myanmar, where Buddhist nationalism is especially strong and drives much of the persecution of Christians. Now the military is back in power, and extremist Buddhist monks often enjoy the support of the army. Covid-19 has brought added challenges, since many Christians are deliberately overlooked in the distribution of government aid.

On 13 January, Open Doors UK launched its 2021 World Watch List: the 50 countries where Christians face the most extreme persecution. The launch event was a live online presentation to MPs, attended by many of them.
