Support for Ukrainian Refugees in Moldova

Moldova, a small former Soviet republic sandwiched between Ukraine and EU member Romania, is one of Europe’s poorest countries and has a total resident population of just 2.6 million people. Around 350,000 refugees have entered Moldova since the war in Ukraine started. Around 100,000 of the refugees (and more all the time) wish to stay close to Ukraine and so are not transiting to other EU nations.

The arrival of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees in Moldova is putting huge pressure on the country and it has appealed for help.

Christ Church has partnered for around 20years with a church in Moldova, Bethany Baptist Church in Chisinau. In 2011, as part of a capital project while the Junction was being built, Christ Church helped to fund a new kitchen at Bethany Church. That kitchen is now preparing hundreds of meals every day to feed refugees.

We are appealing for additional financial support, as Bethany provide meals and support for refugees – providing medical supplies, food, and essentials in a refugee community not far from the church. We have already sent them some funds, as regular mission partners, but by increasing the giving specifically for Moldova we can ensure that the money goes direct to an organisation that is there helping people right now, cutting out any additional administration.

Members of Bethany and other churches are volunteering to bring refugees to their homes for temporary refuge and care. Bethany church has cleared its classrooms, office and meeting rooms in its basement to provide beds for refugees in transit, many wish to stay. The entire congregation is committed to help with shelter, clothing and as much money as they can afford and whatever else they are prepared to sacrifice for the sake of others. We can supplement this and really make a difference.

You can support through card payments here, or by sending a cheque clearly marked ‘MOLDOVA’ payable to Christ Church Chorleywood PCC to the church office, or by transfer to 40 52 40 Account 00007771 clearly referencing Moldova. Please advise sarah.wright@cccw.org.uk if you have made a transfer. Any funds unused by Bethany Church if refugees are able to go home will be used to continue to support the Church’s work with communities in Moldova.
